My Breaking Point
Yesterday I left you with a picture of an overworked coach who was doing a disservice to himself, his education, and gymnasts. I once heard a quote that went something like, “Multi-tasking is a myth. You aren’t doing anything good, just everything awful”. That could not be truer.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I was still doing well in school, and my gymnasts were progressing mostly on schedule. However, I was strung out! Fatigue and exhaustion were hitting me hard.
For as long as I can remember, whenever I am exhausted sickness is in the immediate future. I catch every little cold and cough around when I am stressed and lacking sleep. That was beginning to happen. I was never deathly ill, but my body was not cooperating. I was having to rely on caffeine to make it through lectures in school (something I hate to do). I was taking naps whenever I could spare 30min, and I was falling asleep while studying.
I knew something had to give, and it couldn’t be my education or my job, so I had to stop working out. While that did lighten my load and get some physical and mental stress out of my life, I had to figure out how to become a better coach.
Maybe you can relate. I have a strong desire to do things the right way, and to the best of my ability.
Tomorrow, let me share with you the plan I came up with and let’s see if there is a better option…
